About the String Theory Class:
“String Theory” is an exciting music class designed for middle school students who want to explore the world of stringed instruments, specifically guitar and bass. This class is perfect for beginners and intermediate players alike. Whether you’ve never picked up a string instrument before or you’re looking to improve your skills, “String Theory” will guide you through the fundamentals of playing, reading music, and performing on both guitar and bass.
What You’ll Learn:
In this class, you’ll get hands-on experience with two of the most popular string instruments – guitar and bass. The course will cover:
• Instrument Basics: Learn how to hold and tune your instrument, basic maintenance, and finger positioning.
• Playing Techniques: Develop skills such as strumming, plucking, fretting, and fingerpicking for both guitar and bass.
• Music Reading: Read standard music notation, chord charts, and tablature (tabs) so you can play from a variety of music sources.
• Chords & Scales: Master essential chords, scales, and arpeggios to use in both rhythm playing and soloing.
• Songs & Styles: Play a variety of songs across different genres, including rock, pop, jazz, and classical. You’ll also learn how to play both lead and rhythm guitar as well as different bass techniques like slap bass and walking bass lines.
• Music Theory: Understand how chords and scales work together, as well as the basics of key signatures, intervals, and progressions.
• Ensemble Playing: Practice playing in groups with other students, either in small ensembles or full-class performances.
Instruments Covered:
• Guitar: Acoustic and electric guitars are both covered. You’ll learn how to play basic melodies, chords, and rhythms.
• Bass Guitar: Electric bass is the focus, and you’ll learn how to play bass lines, walking bass, and the role of the bass in a band setting.
Class Structure:
• Daily Practice: Each class will begin with warm-ups and technical exercises designed to improve your dexterity, coordination, and strength on your instrument.
• Group Lessons: You’ll receive instruction as part of a group, learning new techniques and songs together.
• Individual Work: There will be time for individual practice and personalized feedback from the teacher.
• Performance Practice: Students will regularly work together in small groups or full-class ensembles to practice performing songs as a group. You’ll also have opportunities to take turns playing solos or leading sections.
Expectations for Students:
• Bring Your Instrument: Students are expected to bring their guitar or bass to class each day, along with picks, a tuner, and any required music books.
• Commit to Practice: Regular practice at home is essential to develop your skills. Students should aim for 20–30 minutes of practice each day outside of class.
• Be Open to Feedback: Learning a new instrument can be challenging, so it’s important to stay patient and be open to feedback from the instructor and your peers.
Performances:
As part of the “String Theory” class, students will have the opportunity to showcase what they’ve learned through performances, including:
• Class Recitals: At the end of each semester, students will participate in a class recital where they perform solo or as part of a small group.
• School Concerts: Depending on the school’s music program, students may have opportunities to perform at school-wide concerts or events, either solo or in a band setting.
• Collaborations with Other Classes: There may be opportunities to collaborate with other music groups, like the choir, concert band, or jazz band, to perform as part of an ensemble.

• Picks & Tuners: Essential tools for playing and tuning your instrument.
• Method Book: The class will use a method book, which will include exercises and songs to practice.
