8th Grade Concert Band

About the 8th Grade Concert Band:
The 8th Grade Concert Band is the pinnacle of your middle school musical experience! In this advanced band class, students continue to develop their musicianship by playing more challenging music, refining technical skills, and gaining confidence as performers. This is your opportunity to prepare for high school band and take pride in the progress you’ve made over the past few years.

What You’ll Learn:
In 8th grade, band students will:
• Master more complex musical concepts, including advanced rhythms, scales, and harmonies.
• Refine their tone, articulation, dynamics, and phrasing to achieve a more polished sound.
• Develop ensemble leadership skills, learning to listen, balance, and blend within the band.
• Explore a wide range of repertoire, from classical concert pieces to contemporary music.
• Prepare for high school band by building on your performance skills and musical knowledge.

Most students will continue playing the instrument they’ve been learning, but some students may have the opportunity to explore additional instruments.

Instrument sections include:
Woodwinds: Flute, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Saxophone, Oboe, Bassoon

If you are interested in trying a new instrument or adding a secondary one (like switching from flute to piccolo or trumpet to French horn), talk to your band director!

Class Structure:
Daily Rehearsals: We will focus on challenging music that pushes your technique and musicality. Rehearsals will include work from Standard of Excellence Book 2 as well as concert music.
Sectionals: You’ll have small group sectionals to work on instrument-specific techniques, challenging passages, and advanced musical concepts.
Full Band Rehearsals: Full-band rehearsals will emphasize ensemble balance, expression, and preparing for performances.

Expectations for Students:
Be Prepared: Students are expected to bring their instrument, music folder, method book, and pencil to every rehearsal.
Commit to Practicing: To excel at the more difficult pieces we will tackle, students should aim to practice 30 minutes a day at home. Regular practice is essential for improvement!
Show Leadership: As the oldest group in middle school, 8th graders are expected to lead by example—this means demonstrating respect, focus, and a positive attitude during rehearsals.

Performances:
As an 8th grade band member, you’ll have exciting opportunities to perform at various events, including:
Winter Concert (December): Featuring a mix of traditional and holiday music.
Spring Concert (May): A dynamic performance showcasing everything you’ve learned throughout the year.
High School Band Events: Some 8th graders may have opportunities to collaborate with the high school band for special performances or join the high school marching band for events.
Festival Participation: The 8th Grade Band may also participate in music festivals or adjudicated events, where you’ll receive feedback from professional judges.

Opportunities Beyond Class:
Honor Bands & Auditions: Advanced 8th graders may be encouraged to audition for regional or state honor bands. This is a great way to challenge yourself, perform with talented students from other schools, and gain extra performance experience.
Solo & Ensemble Performances: Students interested in performing solo pieces or in small groups (duets, trios, quartets) will have opportunities to showcase their skills at local competitions or school events.
