About the 6th Grade Concert Band:
The 6th Grade Concert Band is an exciting opportunity for students to begin their musical journey by learning to play a band instrument and performing in an ensemble. Whether you’re new to music or have some experience, this class provides a supportive environment for you to explore music, develop new skills, and have fun making music with your classmates!

What You’ll Learn:
In this class, students will:
• Learn the basics of playing a musical instrument.
• Understand how to read sheet music, including notes, rhythms, and dynamics.
• Develop ensemble skills, learning how to play together as a group.
• Practice good posture, breathing techniques, and proper instrument care.
• Prepare and perform pieces in different musical styles for concerts throughout the year.

Instruments in Concert Band:
Students can choose from a variety of instruments to play, including:
Woodwinds: Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone
Brass: Trumpet, Trombone, French Horn, Baritone
Percussion: Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Xylophone, and other rhythm instruments - Percussion Students Required Instruments-PDF

Not sure what instrument is right for you? Don’t worry! We’ll guide you through an instrument fitting process at the start of the year to help you find the one that suits you best.

Class Structure:
Daily Practice: In each class, students will work on exercises from the Essential Elements Book 1 method book. We’ll also spend time rehearsing band pieces for our upcoming performances.
Small Group Lessons: Students will have opportunities to work in small groups by instrument section to focus on technique and specific challenges.
Ensemble Rehearsals: Full-band rehearsals will teach students how to play as part of a larger group, listening to each other and blending sounds.

Expectations for Students:
Bring Your Instrument & Materials: Students are expected to bring their instrument, method book, pencil, and a positive attitude to every class.
Practice at Home: To improve, students should practice at home for at least 10-15 minutes a day.
Be Respectful & Work Together: Concert band is a team effort! Everyone’s contribution is important, and we work together to create great music.

Performances:
Throughout the school year, the 6th Grade Concert Band will have several opportunities to perform, including:
Winter Concert (December): Our first chance to showcase what we’ve learned.
Spring Concert (May): A fun end-of-year performance celebrating our progress.
Special Events: We may also perform at school assemblies or community events!
